Little-known Secret of The Beatles’ Success
Beatlemania was born when the Beatles’s “I Want To Hold Your Hand” was released in the US in December 1963. But this hit song was not the first single they released in the US.
Their first three singles released in 1963 could not break through in American music. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” wasn’t released until January 13th, 1964. Luckily, the release date was moved up because of public demand, which originated partly from one loving fan.
On November 16, 1963, CBS Evening News featured the Beatles in a special report. Marsha Albert, a 15-year-old girl, saw the feature and became an instant fan.
Her devotion led her to write a letter to her local radio station, WWDC, asking why they were not playing anything from the Beatles. The radio station could have played the song “She Loves You,” which was featured on the news report.
Instead of settling, WWDC disc jockey Carroll James requested that the Beatle’s latest British single be brought over to the radio station.
A copy of the single was brought over from Britain, with the help of a stewardess, and played on the air on December 17th, 1963.
Marsha introduced “I Want To Hold Your Hand” on the radio for the first time in the US. Thereby, she helped launch the Beatle’s success.
Through a young fan’s efforts against a major corporation’s restraint, the Beatles could move up the release date by three weeks.
This was a huge victory for them. It gave the Beatles massive exposure over the North American airwaves for a few extra weeks. Ensuring “I Want To Hold Your Hand” had time to achieve the #1 position on the American pop charts before the February 1964 Ed Sullivan Show appearance.
Since they were becoming popular before their appearance, the Ed Sullivan Show ignited a growing flame that would last for decades. If it wasn’t for the persistence of an adoring fan and a disc jockey, the Beatles might have been just another forgotten band.
Would the Beatles have found success regardless? One of their biggest fans wasn’t going to leave it to chance. Don’t leave your success to chance. Take consistent action toward your goals.
Even the Beatles, with all their talent and hard work, needed the help of an adoring fan. Whatever you love, don’t let it wither.
Every seed needs time to germinate and grow, but someone needs to plant and water it. And this principle is the same for health and success.
Don’t expect or wait for someone to do the necessary work. Only you can see your dreams. Most people are programmed for inaction. The person who works toward their dreams and never gives up has little competition.
If even the Beatles needed the help of one fan, how about you and me? I am thankful for fans like you.
