Why do you care about the health benefits of turmeric?

You want to know what to take to heal yourself.

But maybe you wonder how good turmeric can be. After all, it’s a cheap spice you can find anywhere.

Multiple studies show that turmeric is as effective or better than leading drugs at treating a long list of diseases. But unlike expensive drugs, turmeric has almost no side effects.

In this post, you will learn the scientifically proven health benefits of turmeric that you never hear about in commercials. And I guarantee you will want to eat turmeric every day.

Now that you’re excited about turmeric, do you want to know the biggest mistake to avoid?

Turmeric Versus Curcumin

The golden spice turmeric contains a potent phytochemical called curcumin.

Curcumin, however, is just one of over 300 phytochemicals found in turmeric. Each component of turmeric works in synergy as a team.

Turmeric the spice is inexpensive and can’t be patented. Researchers test curcumin based supplements because they can be patented and make a profit.

Studies show that turmeric is as good or better than curcumin alone. Because most studies test just curcumin, turmeric may be underrated!

Now you know that turmeric is cheaper and better than curcumin. Do you want to know the diseases turmeric can help prevent and treat?

14 Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for centuries to treat diseases and illnesses. Here are just some highlights of scientific studies. See the last section for a full list of diseases.

1. Turmeric Is Almost As Good For Your Heart As Exercise

Exercise is one of the best things for heart health. One reason is that it supports your endothelial function.

The endothelium is the thin layer that lines the inside of your heart and blood vessels. It controls vascular contraction and relaxation and control blood clots.

How can you improve endothelial function beyond exercise? Eating turmeric may be the best alternative to exercise for improving endothelial function.

For example:

One study compared turmeric to exercise on endothelial function over eight weeks. Researchers found that eating about a teaspoon a day of turmeric was comparable to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day.

What about both exercise and curcumin?

Another study found that regular exercise with daily curcumin supplementation is greater than either alone.

Why not eat turmeric and exercise to get the best benefit?

Now you know that turmeric is good for your heart, what about cancer?

2. Turmeric Destroys Cancer Cells

Your body has about 10 trillion cells. Almost all your cells turn over every 100 days, making you a new person about every three months.

If you’re replacing 10 trillion cells every 100 days, you need to kill off about 100 billion cells every day. Your body does this through a process called apoptosis, pre-programmed cell death.

Cancer cells avoid apoptosis by turning off their suicide genes. How can you reprogram cancer cells to die?

Curcumin can reprogram the self-destruct mechanism in cancer cells. It can kill dozens of cancer cell types while leaving normal cells alone.

Unlike chemotherapy, curcumin affects numerous mechanisms of cell death at the same time. Therefore, cancer cells have trouble developing resistance to curcumin.

Now you know turmeric curcumin kills cancer cells. Do you want to know how well it works on one of the deadliest cancers?

3. Turmeric Protects Your DNA

About seven percent of tested cells have DNA damage. If you blast those cells with free radicals, that number goes to 10 %. How can you lower this number naturally?

One study found that eating an eighth of a teaspoon of turmeric a day can cut DNA damage in half. Not only did turmeric work the best of all tested spices, but the amount you need to eat is the least as well.

Compared to other spices, turmeric was the only one that lowered DNA damage with or without free radical exposure. One reason is curcumin.

Curcumin is not only an antioxidant, but it also boosts the activity of your antioxidant enzymes.

For example, catalase is one of the most active enzymes in your body. Each one can neutralize millions of free radicals per second!

Eating three-quarters of a teaspoon of turmeric a day can boost the activity of catalase in your bloodstream by 75%.

Researchers tested both raw and cooked turmeric. Cooked turmeric boosted DNA protection while raw turmeric did not show a significant benefit. But they found that raw turmeric was a better anti-inflammatory. So why not eat raw and cooked turmeric?

Now you know how turmeric helps with cancer. How well does it work with one of the most dreaded cancers?

4. Turmeric Helps Treat One of The Most Deadly Cancers

If turmeric only helped prevent or treat pancreatic cancer, then it is worth the hype.

Pancreatic Cancer is one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of cancer. It’s the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and kills 32,000 people a year.

Pancreatic cancer has a five-year survival rate of only 3% and an average survival of just six months.

The only FDA approved therapies for pancreatic cancer help less than 10% of patients while causing severe side effects to the majority.

What about curcumin?

One study found that curcumin helped reduce tumor size in 2 out of 21 patients. The effect may seem small, but there were no curcumin-related side effects up to 8 grams a day.

The study also mentioned that only a small amount of curcumin was absorbed. I wonder if the study tested the whole food turmeric, it would absorb better.

If turmeric can help with hard to treat cancers, how well does it work with late-stage colon cancer?

5. Turmeric Can Help Eliminate Colon Cancer

Turmeric can both help reverse and remove the cause of colon cancer.

One study gave 15 colorectal cancer patients a turmeric extract daily for up to 4 months. The turmeric extract appeared to stall the disease in 5 out of 15 patients.

With almost no downside, a one-in-three benefit for end-stage cancer is promising. If turmeric can help patients with advanced colon cancer, what about prevention?

Colon polyps, small growths on the lining of your colon, can eventually develop into colon cancer.

In one study, researches gave curcumin and quercetin supplements to five patients with a disease that causes hundreds of polyps. On average, all the patients had fewer than half their polyps after six months. And the remaining polyps had shrunk in half.

Another study put 44 smokers on a turmeric curcumin supplement for a month. The researches measured changes in their aberrant crypt foci, which act as a precursor to polyps.

After one month, there was a significant drop in the aberrant crypt foci in the high dose group. But there was no change in the low dose group.

If turmeric can help treat colon cancer and eliminate the cause, what about skin cancer?

6. Turmeric Can Help Heal Skin Cancer

One of the problems with supplementing with turmeric is its bioavailability.

But what happens when you apply turmeric directly to your skin?

In one study, researchers had cancer patients rub a tincture of turmeric on their cancer three times a day. The patients were able to apply turmeric to lesions in the following places: mouth, breast, skin, and vulva.

Previously, the patient’s tumors failed to respond to surgery, radiation, and chemo. So how well did rubbing turmeric on their cancer work?

The turmeric helped reduce the smell of tumors in 90% of cases and itching in almost all cases. And most of the lesions dried up, and 10% had a reduction in lesion size.

Now you know that turmeric can help you from both inside and outside. Do you want to know how turmeric can protect your identity?

7. Turmeric Can Help Reverse Alzheimer’s Disease

One of the most dreaded fears is losing your mind.

Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that disrupts memory, thinking, and behavior.

Can turmeric help save your identity?

One case series studied the effects of treating three Alzheimer’s patients with turmeric. The researchers found that not only did the patient’s symptoms improve, but the burden on their caregivers declined as well.

Turmeric helped relieve the following symptoms: agitation, apathy, anxiety, irritability, and the ability to recognize family.

Alzheimer’s patients were given a teaspoon of turmeric a day, which costs about 15 cents. What about curcumin supplements?

A study of curcumin supplements, rather than turmeric, failed to show a benefit.

Do you think saving your mind is worth 15 cents a day?

Of course!

Then why not 15 minutes? Keep reading to learn how turmeric helps treat diabetes.

8. Turmeric Can Improve Insulin Function

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood sugar (glucose) is too high.

Insulin is a hormone that transports glucose to your cells to give them energy. With type 2 diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin, or it doesn’t work correctly.

Without insulin, glucose stays in your blood and can eventually damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

Curcumin can help improve your insulin function by reducing fat levels in your blood. Excess fat in your blood builds up in your muscle cells, where it causes inflammation and interferes with insulin signaling.

By improving insulin function, Curcumin can help prevent diabetes and reverse symptoms.

For example:

One study tested 240 patients diagnosed with prediabetes. Half the patients received curcumin supplements, and the other half a placebo.

After nine months, 16% of subjects in the placebo group developed type 2 diabetes. But no one in the curcumin group developed type two diabetes.

The curcumin group saw improvement in the following:

  • Fasting blood sugars
  • Glucose tolerance
  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Insulin Sensitivity
  • Beta-cell function

If curcumin can reduce fat in your cells, can it also scavenge free radicals?

9. Turmeric Helps Reverse Damage From Arsenic Poisoning

Arsenic is a carcinogenic heavy metal that creates free radicals that damage your DNA. It also disrupts your body’s ability to repair your damaged DNA.

Curcumin helps scavenge free radicals and chelates or removes heavy metals.

For example:

One study tested people exposed to arsenic in West Bengal, India. Researchers gave half of the subjects curcumin supplements blended with black pepper and the other half a placebo.

By the third month, the DNA damage in the subjects given curcumin supplements was no worse than those who had no arsenic exposure at all.

As an antioxidant, curcumin helped prevent DNA damage. But it also helped reverse the DNA damage caused by arsenic exposure.

Now you know that curcumin can reduce free radicals. Do you want to know how it helps relieve painful inflammation?

Learn more about free radicals and antioxidants in this eye-opening article.

10. Turmeric Helps Treat Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic and debilitating inflammatory bowel disease that affects millions.

Most ulcerative colitis patients need to be on drugs every day for the rest of their lives. These drugs have serious side effects such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and inflammation of the liver and kidneys.

Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory, but how well does it work?

In one study, researches gave patients either turmeric curcumin with anti-inflammatory drugs or a placebo and their drugs.

In the placebo group, eight patients out of 39 (20.5%) relapsed, their symptoms returned. But in the curcumin group, only 2 out of 43 (4.7%) patients relapsed.

The researchers concluded that curcumin is a promising and safe treatment for ulcerative colitis with no reported side effects.

By now, you know that turmeric is a natural alternative to drugs. How well does it compare to new and expensive treatments?

11. Turmeric Beats a $35,000 Lupus Drug

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks the nucleus of your cells and often your DNA itself. Therefore, lupus can damage any organ system and help initiate almost any disease.

Researchers estimate that hundreds of thousands or even millions of Americans have lupus. And women are nine times more likely to get lupus than men!

Lupus drugs have severe or life-threatening side effects, including bladder cancer, leukemia, and infertility.

The latest lupus drugs can cost up to $35,000 a year, how about affordable turmeric?

One study tested 24 patients with relapsing or untreatable lupus nephritis. Researches randomized the patients into two groups. The turmeric group received 500 mg of turmeric a day, and the control group received a placebo.

In the control group, three patients got better, three got worse, and the rest stayed the same.

In the turmeric group, one got worse, one stayed the same, and the majority got better. Patients in the study improved their untreatable lupus with about 5 cents worth of turmeric a day without any side effects!

If turmeric can help with the untreatable, can it help reduce pain?

12. Turmeric Is a Natural Pain Killer

In India, curry, a spice containing turmeric, has been used for centuries as a trusted remedy for traumatic pain and fatigue.

Having surgery is a painful experience. Turmeric offers a natural alternative to pain medication without side effects.

For example:

One study tested the efficacy of turmeric curcumin in pain and fatigue following gallbladder removal. Researches gave fifty gallbladder patients curcumin or a placebo following surgery.

In the weeks following surgery, those in the turmeric group had a dramatic drop in their reported pain and fatigue scores. The control group had enough pain to take 39 rescue painkillers, but the curcumin group only needed to take seven.

If turmeric curcumin can help with pain after surgery, what about arthritis?

13. Turmeric Can Relieve Arthritis Pain

Turmeric can help treat both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the joints and progressively breaks down cartilage and bone.

Almost 80% of RA patients become disabled after 20 years, and 20–30% become permanently within three years of diagnosis.

RA drugs have severe side effects, including blood loss, bone loss, bone marrow suppression, and toxicity to the liver. Turmeric may work just as well without harmful side effects.

For instance:

In one study, researchers randomized 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients into three groups: curcumin, standard drug group, or both. The primary goal of the study was a reduction in disease activity and a reduction in joint tenderness and swelling.

All three groups improved. But the curcumin group had the highest percentage of improvement, significantly better than the drug group.

Not only did curcumin alone relieve pain better than the leading drug, but it also had no apparent adverse side effects.

What about osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, the loss of cartilage in your joints, is the most common cause of physical disability among older adults in the world.

It’s not just a problem of aging as it’s becoming more common among younger people as well. As many as 20% of people in America and Northern Europe will develop the disease by 2030.

Chronic low-grade inflammation from a Western diet is a primary cause of osteoarthritis. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, how well does it work?

One study tested the efficacy and safety of turmeric in patients with knee osteoarthritis. One hundred and seven patients were randomized to receive either 800 mg of ibuprofen per day or 2 g turmeric extracts per day for six weeks.

The turmeric group did just as good or better than the ibuprofen group. If turmeric worked as well as a drug, why choose turmeric? Drugs have side effects.

Ibuprofen can cause ulceration, bleeding, and perforation of the stomach and intestines. What are the side effects of turmeric? Turmeric can potentially protect against a long list of diseases. What are they?
